Construction of these barracks commenced in 1897 and they were opened in 1903, taking the name 'HMS Pembroke' from one of the hulks moored in Chatham Dockyard that, until then, had served as service accomodation. The Barracks closed it's gates for the last time on 18th February 1984. The buildings are now used by the Universities of Greenwich and Kent
